Tips Index

There are many types and varieties of roses. The most commonly used are:

  • Hybrid Tea - These most widely used roses are usually fragrant and can grow to 4'-5' tall

  • Floribunda - This rose flowers in clusters throughout the growing season. Grow to 3' tall

  • Grandiflora - This rose resembles a hybrid tea rose but grows to 6' and usually has 5-7 blooms to a stem

  • Climbers - These roses include many classes of roses and grow very quickly. They grow between 7' and 20' depending on how they are pruned

  • Shrub Roses - These roses are somewhat smaller in size but are generally easier to care for and they grow generally 2-4' tall depending on the variety

  • Flower Carpet™ Roses are an unusually durable rose that can act as a small flowering shrub or groundcover that will usually bloom continuously from May to Frost. They are extremely disease resistant and require only slight pruning to keep their shape. This plant is a must in every landscape. These roses will also bloom in partial shade

Roses
For newly planted rose bushes, add fertilizer after the first blooming cycle and thereafter once a month. Remove spent blooms down to the first five-leaflet leaves, retaining as much foliage as possible.(One exception for required pruning is Flower Carpet™ Rose.)

Bare Root Roses
Be sure to soak the roots of a bare root rose in a root stimulator solution for at least 10-60minutes before planting and prune out any dead canes. If the rose is grafted, consult your HOME & GARDEN SHOWPLACE expert on the correct planting depth in your climate zone.
